Fall is my absolutely favorite time of year. Cooler running weather, cozy sweaters & boots, pumpkin everything, a weekend hiking in the mountains of Asheville, NC to see the leaves change color, and on top of it all…. THE RETURN OF FOOTBALL!
I am an NFL football addict, a fanatic, it is a football frenzy every Sunday around here. (Thank the heavens the college I went to had the longest DI losing streak in the nation and nobody ever went to games. I’d hate to image what my life would be like September – February if two days a week were devoted to the pigskin.) I was raised a Colts fan and attended my first game at the age of 3.
Since then I have missed very few games. Even last season when my poor Colts were ugly I still caught every game, which is very hard to do in the south as they don’t show many of my games on TV. This means that on football Sundays I am up early for my workout and then out the door to a friends house (thank you fabulous friends who bought the football package) to catch the game. Even though I get some sweat time in beforehand I cannot help, but feel my healthy eating suffers a bit on game day. It is like some unwritten football rule that when you meet up with friends to watch a game there must be an over abundance of junk food. Do I try to be good? Yes. I BYO bag of PopChips to share/engulf while everyone else is eating potato chips. However, lets be real – Sometimes I cannot resist. Last Sunday there was white pizza covered in artichokes, spinach, and onions. Heavenly, I had 2 slices. Whoops!
So how can I keep myself on track, still enjoy a bit of the delicious food that is part of football season and not feel so guilty? (Well besides bringing healthier options and portion control.) I can get a workout in while I watch – enter my Football Frenzy. Do it by yourself while you watch (that just sounded dirty), grab a friend, challenge an opponent. Not only does this workout get your heart pumping, and burn a few extra tailgate calories, but it also gets you even more involved in the game. I know I’ll be cheering twice as hard today for those stupid Vikings, who are playing my Colts, to miss every field goal. I hate burpees!
Try the Football Frenzy Challenge yourself, recruit a friend, challenge that annoying person who won’t stop trash talking. Bring it on! Good luck, hope your teams win this weekend, unless they are playing my Colts… then you’re going down! 😉
