I’ll be very honest, my Chicago Marathon training goals are very different than for most marathon training cycles – no time goals, nothing performance based. Instead my goals are more holistic based on where I am right now.
1. Run Injury Free –
Continue working with my sports med chiropractor (and ART) to be able to run pain free. This especially includes figuring out all the foot, ankle, and calf issues I have been having. In addition to working with the doctor I am also trying adding different insoles to my shoes, trying a new style of shoes, and really just listening to my body.
2. Focus on Getting Healthy –
I am using this training as a way to get myself up off the couch and out the door when I am not as motivated as I used to be. The truth is that I am still struggling with being very tired, so having a goal to work towards really helps. This marathon training cycle is providing me with a way to get my exercise in, which is one big step to getting back to being healthy. (Also, I just met with my doctors last week and they doubled my thyroid meds because my T3 levels were still WAY too low, so hoping that helps too.)
No time goals, nothing really relating to race performance – just more about me getting back to feeling like myself again. For now I am very happy with that as a goal. After this, I plan to focus on half marathons until next winter when I will hopefully be back to feeling great, or at least good, so that I can set those big goals and aim for a marathon PR.
