When Instagram did their latest update and added in Instagram Stories the social media world went wild. Would this be the end of SnapChat? Would it cause the Instagram platform to boom? And what exactly were IG Stories anyway? Well after a few weeks with this new feature we can finally answer these questions.
What are Instagram Stories?
Instagram Stories are those little circular profile images that have appeared above your newsfeed. Just touch one and it will begin playing the video (make sure your sound is on) or showing you the images. Instagram stories are special because they do not appear in your newsfeed at all. Instead they are only available in this format for 24 hours and then they are gone forever.
Will Instagram Stories Be the End of SnapChat?
Many people were initially worried that Instagram stories would be the end of SnapChat since they have a similar premise. However, data collection has shown that SnapChat usage hasn’t declined any since Instagram began their stories feature.
Why Should I Use Instagram Stories?
You need to jump into Instagram stories because while SnapChat has not suffered from the addition of this feature it has really changed the way people use Instagram. Newly collected data shows that less people are scrolling through their account looking at all the pictures and more people are instead watching the Instagram stories. That means if you want to get the most out of Instagram as a social media tool, and reach the most people, you need to start creating stories.
How Do I Create an Instagram Story?
First, touch the little plus sign in the left hand corner. Then, snap a picture or take a short video. If you want to add text touch the Aa button (top right) to type on the image or the paintbrush button to draw/write with your finger. Finally, click the check mark and your story will post. Remember that your story will disappear in 24 hours.
However, if you would like to see who is viewing it and how it is performing before then, touch the first circular icon in the story row that says “Your Story”. At the very bottom, in the middle, of your image will be the number or people who viewed it. Tap on this and you can see exactly who viewed your story, save your story, or delete your story.
What Type of Content Works for Instagram Stories?
Instagram stories are meant to be more impromptu and not as thought out as the images that go in your time line. Short videos and images of your real life are what Instagram is targeting this new feature too. Remember these stories will disappear 24 hours after you create them so you won’t be flooding your followers if you add a lot of stories.
Ideally you want to aim for 2/3 traditional Instagram picture posts with really high quality graphics, inspiring quotes, etc. On these traditional posts you should also write a detailed description in the caption and use hashtags. On your Instagram Stories on the other hand, I would aim for 5-10 a day. Remember these are quick posts without the detailed captions or hashtags.
