When I last checked in on marathon training I was 24 weeks out from the NYC marathon and getting ready to start my training pretty soon. However, I was currently struggling to get in my 5 workouts a week, some weeks I hit all 5, but most weeks it was 3 or 4 workouts instead. I was very hopeful that starting up training, having a set goal, and being back with my coach would be the magic I needed to get my motivation back.
I am happy to report that I started training 23 weeks out from the marathon and have completed weeks 23, 22, 21, and 20. It seems like the first 4 weeks of my training have flown by and I cannot believe the NYC marathon is just 19 weeks away. Overall, I have done great hitting my workouts. I did miss one long run because I accidently got so sunburnt the day before it hurt to put on a sports bra, and I missed one easy run because my legs needed a rest after an intense weekend hiking trip in Asheville, but other than that I have hit every run on my schedule – a huge improvement from before.
I was also really worried about how my runs would go after having missed so much time running. I knew I would not be where I was, but I was worried to see how far off I would be. The truth is that my speed is pretty much gone I have no push at the end of runs like I used to, went from a 26:36 5K to a 30 minute 5K, and at Orange Theory Fitness my I am struggling to hold a push pace that is less than what my base pace used to be – Boo! However, it seems that while my speed (tempo/push pace, interval/all out pace, or whatever you want to call it) tanked, my easy running pace actually did not suffer as much as I expected. I am thrilled with this because the marathon will be more about running long at an easy pace than speed anyway. Yes, my easy pace is still about a minute or so off were I would like it, but I am working on coming back and slowly seeing improvement as I begin to get into my workouts.
Overall, I am very happy with how the first 4 weeks of my NYC marathon training has gone. I am making my workouts a priority, am feeling more confident in myself, and am slowly, but surely, picking up a bit of the fitness I have lost. 4 weeks down, 19 weeks to go.
