When visitors come to your blog they not only see your content they also notice the style and function of your blog and the way your sidebar is set up has a lot to do with these two things. So today I am coming to you with some tips on setting up your sidebar, namely the top 3 items you need to be sure you have included:
– An About Me Section
– A Website Search Bar
– Your Social Media Icons
Now, while your About Me Section should be the very top when you are setting up your sidebar it doesn’t matter which one comes second and which on comes third, your website search bar, or your social media icons. However, these three things should be the very top three items in your sidebar and everything else should be placed below them.
Setting Up Your Sidebar:
1. An About Me Section – Your about me section helps to personalize your blog and show your readers who you are. This helps to build a connection which is essential when creating an audience. Your about me section should tell who you are, what you do/blog about, and let your personality shine through. In addition to the text be sure to include a photo (we are a very visual society) and have a link that connects to your full About Me Page so your readers can find out even more about you.
2. A Website Search Bar – A website search bar is a crucial piece of your blog homepage that many people forget and leave off. This allows your reader to search your specific site for the content they want. And don’t we want our readers to stay and search around our sites instead of heading to other places? I use these a ton on sites that have them. Like when I remember that fabulous cooking blog which had that amazing dessert recipe I now want to make – I can go directly to the site and search for it instead of having to dig around through all their old blog posts. Nice and fast and way less frustrating, which makes me a happy (and likely to return) reader.
3. Your Social Media Icons – I know I do not have to tell you all how important it is to be able to connect with your readers. (REALLY IMPORTANT!) Social media creates a platform that allows you to form relationships with your current readers, and even find new ones, it has changed the way we blog. Because of this, it is so important that you include links to all your social media accounts on your sidebar. This gives your readers an easy way to follow you on as many platforms as they want so that you can keep the dialogue flowing.

Do you have these 3 essentials in your sidebar?
What else do you find important to your own personal sidebar? I personally like to put visual links to some of my popular posts in the sidebar (below these 3 items) as well.
