As runners, it is really important that we think about what we put into our bodies, as what we eat can, in turn, affect how well we perform. The holiday season can be hard for everyone, but when we runners start to indulge too much, we begin to notice that our runs start slipping. Whether it is sleeping in and missing a run because you where out too late at a Christmas party the night before, or just feeling crummy all run because your pre-run fuel consisted of a tray of mom’s famous Christmas cookies, or even packing on a few extra pounds and feeling that jiggle weigh you down a bit during your speed work. There are so many ways that the holiday season—and the fabulous holiday foods that come along with it—can impact your running, so it is important that we focus on making smart decisions and eating right this holiday season.
5 Tips for Runners to Eat Right This Holiday Season
Be sure to drink water throughout the day, as this will help you stay full and keep some of those cravings at bay. Plus, water is fabulous for you in so many different ways. Make a conscious effort to carry a water bottle with you to work so you can hydrate throughout the day.
2. Eat a Balanced Breakfast
Start your day off on the right foot by eating a nice, healthy breakfast. If you start your day off right, you are more likely to make smarter decisions throughout the day. Whereas if you start your day off with two doughnuts, it will be a tough road ahead. Set that alarm just a few minutes ahead to be sure there is time to have a good meal.
3. Limit the Booze
It seems like everyone walks into holiday parties with a bottle in hand, and the cocktails are always free-flowing. Every time you turn around, someone is offering you a drink, and after a while you may say yes just because it is easier than telling everyone no thank you. However, your body and run will thank you if you use this tip: Take a drink glass and fill it with Sprite. It looks like you are having a cocktail, so nobody will offer you a drink and you can just slowly sip it all night.
4. Snack, Don’t Splurge
Allow yourself to enjoy the holiday treats. If you make them totally off-limits, you’ll either feel left out and deprived, or you might go off the deep end and pig out. Instead, enjoy the holiday treats in smaller snack-sized portions instead of as huge splurges. Love Mom’s famous cookies? Instead of trying all six varieties, pick your favorite one or two. You’ll feel much better knowing you didn’t eat half a dozen.
5. Pack Healthy Snacks
With running errands, Christmas shopping, holiday events, etc., we can get caught up in the hustle and bustle. It is important to pack high-quality snacks that can help you stay on track. I suggest tossing a few LARABARs in your car, gym bag, or purse, so if you find yourself hungry while you are running around you have a delicious, healthy snack packed full of nutrients to grab. LARABARs are way better than hitting that fast-food drive-thru, and, with all their amazing flavors, you’ll really enjoy them. Plus, they are gluten-free, kosher, vegan, dairy-free, and non-GMO, and have no added sugar, artificial ingredients, preservatives, fillers, or coloring, so they are a snack you can feel good about eating not only this holiday season, but also into the New Year.
At LARABAR®, we believe that the foundation of a sound mind, body and spirit is derived from what you eat – and what you eat is most delicious and satisfying when it’s in a whole, natural state.
