It is no secret that my running motivation has been pretty much nonexistent lately. Between injuries, a crazy schedule, and just a general lack of motivation I went from working out 5/6 days a week to almost no workouts at all over the last 2 or 3 months and a couple of DNS races to show for it. I know we all go through ebbs and flows, but this is very unlike me and I just don’t feel like myself. Luckily, I am slowly working on getting myself up and running again (pun intended) so I can feel more like my normal self.
However, I needed some tricks to get my motivation back as I must admit – I was just not feeling it. I came up with 5 Ways to Get Back Your Running Motivation (and my running motivation) and have been putting them into action this week. I booked Orange Theory Fitness classes for Tuesday and Thursday (tip 2) and added three new songs to my iPod (tip 4). Plus, I plan on getting in some fitness time with friends over my holiday break (tip 1)
5 Ways to Get Back Your Running Motivation
1. Schedule a Run with a Friend –
Having a run pre-scheduled with a friend holds you accountable. You are much more likely to get out and get active when you know that someone else is counting on you to be there. Set a weekly meet up time to help you get back on track. Soon you’ll find yourself working out between your meet-ups.
2. Book a Class –
Try a workout class that includes running like Orange Theory Fitness. By scheduling a class you are making an appointment for yourself and are more likely to stick to it, like you would other appointments. Plus, trying out new classes can be a great way to break out of a fitness rut or get back on track when you have been lacking motivation.
3. Give Yourself Something to Train for –
That race you have been thinking about… register for it! Having something to look forward to and train for gives you a reason to get out and get active. Then create a training plan/schedule to get yourself prepared and cross off each workout as you get it done.
4. Create a New Running Playlist –
You would be amazed at how downloading a few new songs can help you get out the door. You add a couple songs and next thing you know you find you are more excited to go run just because you want to listen to your new music; totally worth the few bucks in iTunes.
5. Get an Awesome New Outfit or New Pair of Shoes-
One of the best ways to motivate yourself – new gear. Buy yourself an awesome new running outfit like this fabulous hoodie with a killer pattern and rocking thumbholes or the newest release of your favorite shoe, my top pick is the Wave Rider 19.
