My mother and I headed up to Saluda, NC (outside of Asheville) this past weekend because she wanted to zipline. She is much braver than I, but I willingly agreed because it sounded like a fun experience and was something I wanted to check off my bucket list. As the event got closer I was having mixed feelings – half of me was super excited, and the other half was hoping that my crazy fear of heights did not ruin things for me.
I will admit that starting down that first zip was a bit scary, but you don’t feel like you are falling, more like you are sliding across the line which really helped me. After that very first one, I was totally fine with the ziplines and so happy I had agreed to come because the views were awesome.
Their one sky bridge was by far the scariest thing because it was so very wobbly. However, it was very short and I made it across just fine. I felt safe the whole time even on that wobbly sky bridge because when ziplining at The Gorge you have two guides with you at all times who are constantly keeping you clipped in and anchored up so there is no chance of you ever falling.
The Repelavators, where you where slowly lowered straight down to the ground, were fabulous once I got going, but that first step off straight down into thin air was scary. Overall, once you made that first step you were fine and it was fun to relax as you were lowered down.
I was so happy that even with my crazy fear of heights this is something I was able to truly enjoy. There between 6 – 8 people in most groups and the tour took anywhere between 3 – 4 hours depending on how fast your group moved. I highly suggest ziplining at The Gorge because they were very organized, had 2 guides who were always with you, were very safety focused, but still a ton of fun.
Would you ever try ziplining?
Have you done it before?
