As you may be aware, I am a HUGE Mizuno fan and I wear a wide variety of their shoes.
The Wave Hitogami 2 are my Orange Theory/cross training shoe, the Wave Sayonara 2 are my 5k/10K shoe and for when I do speed work, my bread and butter is the Wave Rider 18 which tackles pretty much any run over 6 or 7 miles with me, and I even have the Wave Kazan for trails. So, when this box arrived on my doorstep I was interested to try out the new wave Enigma 5 in order to see where it would fit in my Mizuno rotation.
I was happy when I opened the box because I love purples and blues and the shoes color (which is called Aster) is more purple than pink with bright teal accents. However, I was also surprised – a pillow…hmmmm.
Turns out the pillow was there because the key feature of the Wave Enigma 5 is how soft it is, as I soon found out from the inside of the shoe box.
It was time to strap the Wave Enigma 5 on and try it out so I could tell you all about it.
I have been in this shoe for about a month and a half now and have taken it on everything from easy recovery runs, to half marathon distance long runs, to hill workouts in Atlanta to see what exactly it is capable of and how it feels. Mizuno is right – this baby is soft! The Wave Enigma 5 has the most cushioning of any Mizuno shoe which makes all your runs feel super soft. However, even with all that added cushioning it is only an ounce heavier than the Wave Rider 18. That means you get a ton of extra soft cushioning, without lots of added weight.
The Wave Enigma 5 would be perfect for runners who:
– love to have a bit of extra cushioning underfoot
– are training for longer races
– want something extra soft for their recovery days
– are injury prone and need that extra plush feel
– or are just looking for an amazing shoe to wear at a job where they are on their feet all day
I personally have been loving this shoe for its super soft, plush feel on my easy recovery days (when my legs are dead) and think it would be fabulous when I move back to full marathon training next year because by mile 20 I am praying for all the cushion I can get.
However, I don’t want to keep these awesome shoes all to myself.
