I went through a tough period for a few years where I was in pain every time I ran. I just couldn’t seem to get myself healthy and I ended up deferring many races, or just not showing up at all. I was miserable. I went through PT, but nothing seemed to help. All I ever dreamed about was getting back to the runner I once was, but I knew that would take some help.
Top 3 Things That Have Improved MY Running:
1. Going to a sports med chiropractor who practices ART (Active Release Techniques) –
When I first started with my sports med chiro I was barely hobbling along and in pain every time I ran. Our work together was a long process, not some overnight success, but it has been so very worth it. He was able to identify what was causing my injuries more accurately than the PT I had quit seeing, and because of that we were able to begin making progress, albeit slow progress, right away. For the first year and a half I visited him once a week and also did assigned strengthening and stretching activities at home. After a year and a half I was finally running injury free, so now I continue to see him every other week as a preventative measure – we work on all the little aches and pains that pop up.
2. Hiring a running coach –
When I really sat down and thought about how I had let me injury get so far that I had run in pain for years – it came down to the fact that I wasn’t always making the smartest decisions for my body. When I felt like running long I did, when it was time for a cut back week I fudged it up. The truth was it was time to find someone to save me from me. When I found out that Laura of MommyRunFast was the same price a week as my Starbucks I signed up instantly.
3. Joining Orange Theory Fitness –
In the end, one issue that both my sports med chiro and running coach kept bringing up is that certain parts of my body (I’m talking about you glutes) lacked the strength they needed for the running I was doing. My coach put strength training days on my schedule every single week, but in the end that was always the day I found an excuse to skip. Enter Orange Theory Fitness which not only is a fabulous workout, but forces me to lift weights and do strength workouts in an environment I enjoy. Because of OTF, I am now doing strength work 2 or 3 times each week.
I am not quite as fast as I was 4 years ago yet, but I have been running pain free for 8 months and am over the moon with all the improvements I am making. I would highly recommend seeing a sports med chiro, hiring a running coach, and finding your nearest Orange Theory fitness for anyone who wants to improve their running.
