Charleston’s Reindeer Run 5K is coming up this Saturday in beautiful downtown. I haven’t raced a 5K since the Race the Landing Series this summer. Instead, I have been focused on half marathon training and not thinking much about racing shorter distances, but I do still have some big goals. I am hoping the fact that it is supposed to be in the 50s/60s the morning or the race, instead of 90 something with 100% humidity, like it was this summer, will instantly help a bit with my time. I guess we shall see if that theory is right.
C Goal = Sub 30 = 9:39 pace, or under –
This is always my 5K C goal. Anytime I run a sub 30 5K I feel like I have achieved something because it is rare that I manage to run below 10 minute miles other than during a 5K race. Anything below about 10 minutes a mile feels very fast, like I am pushing hard, and I am happy with that.
B Goal = Sub 29 = 9:19 pace , or under –
I was able to to break under 29 and finished with three 28:something races at the Race the Landing Series this summer. Each one was tough and I didn’t just feel like I was racing hard, I hit that point where it was pretty miserable. (Have I mentioned I prefer to run 13.1 miles at a normal pace as opposed to the all out crazy push that is a 5K?) I would be very proud of a hard fought race like that.
A Goal = Sub 28 = 9:00 even pace, or under –
This summer I set a new PR of 28:10. Is it possible to chop 11 seconds off that time and run a sub 28? Truthfully I am not sure, but I am definitely going to go for it. I know it won’t be easy. I know I will be miserable the whole time. (Really, I am such a distance runner please let me run slow and long instead.) However, I also know it is good for my body to switch it up and run different distances and different types of races. Plus if that PR happens all the 5K misery will be worth it as I’ll be over the moon afterwards. So, here goes nothing…time to lose 11 seconds, about 4 seconds a mile faster than my fastest 5K ever…
