Every holiday season one of the Charleston County Parks, The James Island Park, suddenly becomes famous for having an amazing holiday light display. Cars wait in line for ridiculously long times and pay $15 per vehicle to check out the over 2 million lights.
However, I have discovered the secret –
The two nights before the festival opens the park schedules fun runs. Each night runners and walkers are able to enter the park and make their way through the two mile loop for a $12 race registration fee. (This is an untimed, casual, fun run/walk.)
My friends and I all agreed that this will have to become a yearly event. Seeing the lights by foot as we ran and walked through the park was so much more fun than sitting in a line of cars. Plus, we all felt we got to experience everything a lot better this way. It was an amazing way to kick off the start of the holiday season. I would like to point out that this was not planned –
… however, I totally look like an angel standing in front of the lights. Wings and all! HA!After running through the lights there is a little holiday village in the middle of the park you can walk around. It has an awesome sand sculpture and tons of great handmade, huge, holiday greeting cards from local school children. Plus, it has a train, carousel, and rock climbing wall for the kids. On top of that, you can purchase all the fixins for s’mores right there and cook them over the fires the park has going. I totally suggest this fun run to anyone in the Charleston area.
