Yesterday I celebrated my 31st birthday. I have friends who are having mental breakdowns about entering their 30s, but it really isn’t phasing me. Actually for about the last 3 months when I was 29 I rounded up and told everyone I was 30, and in truth 31 doesn’t feel any different.
I know what you are thinking – Who does that? What woman voluntarily adds years to her age?
The truth is I was am excited about my 30s. The start of a new decade sounds like such a clean slate to turn myself into the person I want to become. I spent most of my twenties eating junk food, hanging out on my couch, and staying up to late watching trashy TV. It was not an ideal lifestyle!
However, when I was 28.5 (my mother is obsessed with half years) I started training for my first half marathon and right before my 30th birthday I ran my first full. Running has given me so many gifts- it has made me more confident, more determined, shown me what I am capable of, given me new friends, and on top of that a healthier body and mind. Also, running has made me feel comfortable adding more candles to my cake. I am not worried about aging because I know that every year I am becoming healthier than I was the year before. Now I will admit that 30 was ugly, I missed almost the entire year with injuries and deferred way more races than I ran. So her goes nothing – come on 31 – time to show the world what running can do – time to be healthier than I was at 25, or 21, or even 18! Bring on the 30s – I plan on running my way right through them!
Even my birthday presents were running themed! –
I got a Camelbak for all the 100+ degree summer Marine Corp Marathon training runs and Yurbuds Women’s headphones so I can stop adjusting my cheapo ones throughout my runs. Awesome!
What is the best running/fitness gift you ever got?
As amazing as these are I think my best running gift is my Country Music Marathon sponsorship courtesy of Mizuno. Becoming an ambassador for a brand I love and getting to represent them at my marathon in Nashville was such an amazing, surprising gift and it will be a very hard one to top!
