Diet Bet Week 2 Results

I am super happy to say that the numbers went down this week – 2.4 pounds.
diet bet week 2 In truth I wasn’t expecting them to go down so much since I had to miss or modify 4 (actually 5 now) workouts this week due to being so sick.  I thought I’d probably only see a pound loss.  However, I did really focus on trying to eat better and counting my calories.
Or it could be this…
the flu It’s official, I have the flu and it is ripping me to shreds.  I have been spending all day in bed or on the couch except for this short break to the computer.  You do not even want to know how many blankets I am covered in! – Freezing!  So in truth, maybe the fact that my body is currently being ravaged and chewed up may have to do with the weight loss.  I guess I’ll just have to wait and see next week.  However, until then, with all this crummy flu stuff I am just going to be happy about the loss.  Woohoo!  Over 5 pounds down!

FYI- This is the first time in 10 years I have gotten the flu shot.  Also, the first time in that long I’ve gotten the flu.  Evil.  Ironic.
Besides resting like crazy, anything you find helps make the flu a little less horrible?

  1. You are getting your flu shot with me next year Abby! I didn’t want it but the doc said with my asthma, he didn’t want to take any chances…and the flu has run rampant! I hate seeing you sick :( Feel better – rest…and lots of it!

  2. Congratulations on your progress!

I’m sorry you are still not feeling well, take care of yourself!

  3. Congrats but that sucks that you’re fluey!

I don’t quite know how the flu shot works, but I thought that because there are so many strains, it covers you for the seasonal one, and then each year that you get a shot it makes it less likely for you to get the flu at all, because … I don’t know. I wanted to say ‘they morph into a super flu fighting transformer’ but it sounded kind of lame.

    • According the med school run partner the flu shot is basically a prediction of the strain they think will hit that year. Some years they do better and some years worse.
This year it is supposedly protecting from about 50% of the flu which she sad is pretty good.
      Who knows….
I apparently got smacked by the other 50%

  4. Congrats on being down in weight! That’s fantastic when you didn’t expect it. And I’m sorry you have the flu. That whole getting a flu shot and getting the flu thing is kind of odd. I hope you feel better soon!

    • I know it seems totally counter intuitive right? Get a shot get the flu.
However, I guess they are not 100% effective and my doctor said I probably would have been even worse if I had not had the shot.

  5. I am truly impressed with your progress. Jealous too!!! I am curious, what are you eating? Can you share what you eat in a day? We are the same body type (height & weight) but different in age….I am older. I am ready to throw my scale out the window…….because my weight will not go down. I am just really curious as to what you are eating.

    • Misty I am a huge calorie counter and track everything on MyFitnessPal. I find that really helps me to keep my calories and portion sizes in control. I usually aim for about 1,500 calories a day as I am pretty active, but can eat up to as much as 2,000 calories a day on hard workout days (long training runs). I you would like to email me at backatsquarezero@gmail.com I would love to show you what a basic day looks like for me complete with calorie counts and all, but it would be a lot to type here.
It know it can get frustrating, and the scale can stick (mine tends to freeze at 160), but as long as you are eating right and exercising you are doing the right thing and it will eventually pay off.

  6. Boo on the flu! So so sorry you’re sick Abby! I hope it goes away quickly! Congrats on the loss though! :-)

  7. I’m so sorry you’re sick! But maybe because you didn’t indulge in all of the Super Bowl snacks you’ll kick everyone else’s butt at next week’s weigh in. I don’t think there’s much you can do to feel better with the true flu except for take some medicine, which it looks like you already got from your doctor. I sincerely hope you feel better soon!

    • So far I’ve been sleeping about 16-18 hours a day which has helped me feel a lot better, but will also make going back to work tomorrow really rough.

  8. I get the flu shot every year and I’ve only gotten it a handful of times in my life (so far). I really need it since I have asthma and I’m at a higher risk for having it develop into bronchitis or pneumonia…

Myth debunking time: getting flu shot will not make you sick. Unless you have an allergy to eggs, then you will be a different type of sick. And the virus mutates ALL the time, so the shot is just the most common strains that year, but not ALL off the strains. You were likely lucky and caught a rare one….but hey, it might help you win this bet!!!

    • I just think it is ironic that I got it after getting the shot.
I heard because of all of teh strains it is only about 50% effective this year so I must have gotten hit by something it doesn’t cover.

  9. Oh no!! I’m so sorry that you have the flu; feel better soon!!

  10. Feel better pretty lady! Lots of rest and cheesy magazines!

  11. Terrible that you have the flu!!! I have only gotten the flu shot once – and I ended up with it too! After that I figured I’ll just take my chances.

Congrats on the lbs lost! You’re going to do awesome with the DietBet challenge this round! Although it may be due to sickies, just remember sickies will be paying you back with $s. lol Does that help make it any better? :/ <3 ya!

    • That is what I am telling myself to. If I am going to be sick anyway why not put a positive spin on it right.
However, I must admit that missing a week of training sucks. My body wants to move!

  12. Oh, I hope you feel better soon! I had the flu in December and it was so so bad. Take good care of yourself and get some rest!

  13. Oh I hope you feel better! Good job on your numbers though!!!

  14. It is kind of funny that this is the first time I got the shot and I got it. Ironic I guess. However, I may have gotten it even worse if I didn’t have the flu.
