Charlie Post Classic Goals

Apparently the Charleston Half Marathon this past weekend wasn’t enough to scare me away from my 13 races in 2013 goal.  So exactly one week post half I will be racing again, okay who am I kidding, I’ll be doing my marathon training run on a race course.  I am just not quite healthy enough to run full speed yet.  However, the Charlie Post Classic is perfect as it is pretty much the exact distance my marathon plan calls for this weekend so I am just going to enjoy the run.
charlie post What do I know about the Post Classic?  Nothing!
- Could not tell you the route
- Don’t know if it is on roads or the beach
- Heck I don’t even know who this Charlie Post dude is
- In truth I never even heard of a 15K race before
- For that matter I probably need to Google this and figure out a where and when

So why run a race I know absolutely nothing about?
- I need 13 races this year
- This one is very close by
- I’m trying to save money, and it’s cheap

Going into this knowing nothing my goals aren’t too crazy:
- Finish well
- Stop and stretch if I am in pain
- Run at a 10min. mile pace (if possible- I’ve been a bit sick this week so we shall see)

Have you ever run a race you knew nothing about?
Am I bat crap crazy for doing this?

  1. Have a great race Abby! And no you’re not crazy…I did several races as training runs during marathon training! Makes it more fun!

  2. AN automatic PR! Sometimes it is fun to run an unfamiliar race :)

  3. Many races I run I know next to nothing about until pretty close to the race, especially being new in town. That’s sort of the point of doing a race I guess. I do races where I don’t know anyone, but I don’t like to leave any race without meeting someone new.

And you know something about it… you know me… haha… I will be there :) . So, we need to get a pic together or hang out before or after.

The route is basically paved streets of Sullivan’s Island. 15K is 9.3 miles… so pretty much the whole island. Charlie Post was a physician here in Charleston like 30 years ago and he was a runner, and after he died, they named a race for him. I’ve never done a 15K before either… but all the information was in the Post and Courier, that’s where I learned all this :) . I think it’s called Charleston Scene… little newspaper.

It should be a fun race, I am excited for it and hope the breakfast burritos are something I can eat (it kinda scared me when I saw they had that, then went to the gas station and saw burritos 2 for $2. Lets hope it’s not the same burrito).

    • Thanks for sending me the newspaper info on him. I liked reading a bit about it.
Plus I survived without being ridiculously, anally, over prepared.

  4. Pretty much I only look up the pertinent info like where to park, when I need to be there, what type/when I should expect fuel and if there are any hills. Other than that, I leave the rest as a surprise! Good luck this weekend! 15k, so thats 9.3 miles?

  5. You gotta love cheap and local! Yay for the come better kid! :)

  6. I don’t know why, but I just giggled when I read this post. I was thinking, yep, that sounds like a runner.

  7. Yes I have. My first 5k and my first half marathon I was totally deer in the headlights. My first half I didn’t even know how long it was! I think I ran more out of being scared than really knowing what to do!
No you aren’t crazy, just (as we have said a bunch of times) listen to your body and RUN SMART :) You’ll do just fine!

  8. I don’t know why, but this post made me giggle. I just kept thinking, yep, that sounds like a runner. Who cares what the race is about, let’s just do it. :)

  9. You will do great! Good for you getting out there again. Enjoy!

  10. I think I’ve done progressively less research/preparation with each race I’ve done. Knowing that where and when stuff is pretty handy though. :) Good luck!!! You’ll kill it! :)

  11. Haha I have run a race where I knew nothing about it, the one with Sarah actually! I usually try to figure out some information but for smaller races I usually don’t worry about it too much. I love the 15K distance, have fun!

  12. Nah…just enjoy your instant PR!

  13. I have never done a 15k, but I did do a trail 12k & an 8.6 mile races last summer. Have fun at the race!

  14. I know nothing about any race. :) I don’t think you’re crazy! You had me at affordable. That’s my goal, get all 13 5Ks in at a price I can afford.

Thinking about this as part of your training is perfect!

  15. Yes, doing the research for 13 in 2013 I discovered a ton of new local races that are getting my interested.
I love the simple, local, cheap ones.
