I decided to break my goals into three different categories this year: running, healthy eating, and personal. Then, to focus on three goals for each area, or 9 total goals this year.
I already shared my other goals so be sure to look and see what all I have my sights set on for 2013.
2013 Goals – Running (Fitness)
2013 Goals – Healthy Eating
My personal goals this year focus on my own personal three Rs: rest, relax, and relationships.
Goal Number 1 – Rest – I will follow a strict sleep schedule.
My alarm is currently the bane of my existence. I am up every morning at 6:00 and at work by 7:00. Problem is that since I started blogging I am always finding more I can do and staying up later, and later, and later. Which basically just leaves me more exhausted in the long run. Come on Abby, your blog is about finding a healthy lifestyle and sleeping enough is part of that.
I am now giving myself a curfew -
Computer off by 9:30.
In bed, lights out, by 10:30.
Seriously, even if I have to shut it down mid-post, mid-comment, mid-tweet. I need to rest.
Goal Number 2 – Relax – I will find time to read (for fun).
This summer I purchased an entire nightstand full of books. I was sure I would have tons of time to read since I had finished all my grad school night classes.
Flash forward 6 months-
There they are – all still sitting on my nightstand. I started one, but got too wrapped up in trying to do too much. I’ve been so busy trying to grow my blog that every free second has been filled with something else I could be doing, improving, researching. The only book I read in the past 6 months- one on SEO (Search Engine Optimization). It’s time to slow down, to realize everything doesn’t have to always be go-go-go, to remember that I love reading and that it calms me down, relaxes me, and helps me fall asleep.
I will use the hour between when I shut down my computer and turn my lights out to shower, throw on pjs, do my PT stretches, and then actually read a book (for fun) for about 30 minutes.
Goal Number 3 – Relationships – I will be present when I am with friends and family.
Part of being a blogger is the constant connection to social media. Let me be real – I am now a member of so many social media sites/programs that it is ridiculous. Heck, I did not even know half of them existed until 8 months ago when I started blogging.
You can now find me on:
Twitter and Instagram: @BackAtSquare0
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/BackAtSquare0
Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/BackAtSquare0
YouTube: www.youtube.com/BackAtSquare0
and even…
Tumblr: http://backatsquarezero.tumblr.com/
What does all this mean? It means I am constantly connected. My phone is off from 7-3 at work, but other than that it is constantly by my side so I can stay up to date. I am glued to that phone worse than a 15 year old girl. Somehow I have convinced myself that part of growing my blog is being in constant contact, constant interaction, always available. Yikes!
My new goal is to realize that while I love blogging, and while both blogging and the health/fitness community have become an important part of my life, they do not take priority over my other relationships.
I need to focus on building, nurturing, and respecting the relationships I have with family and friends by being more in the moment. My goal is to focus on my quality time with family and friends and leave my phone in my purse (and silenced) while I am with them.
This goal will probably make my parents very happy on our weekly family dinner nights.
My 2013 Personal Goals:
- Rest – Curfew – Computer off by 9:30 and in bed, lights out, by 10:30.
- Relax – Find time to read (for fun) before bed.
- Relationships – I will be more present in the moment with family & friends (and less glued to my phone).
What personal goals do you have for 2013?

I think I may have to steel your goals to add to mine, I totally need to work on all of those…good luck
Steal away.
Oh no,it’s about bed time! I need to,be better…hard with an iPad
Yes, I use me iPhone in bed way too much too. We both must work on that
Last January I started setting my alarm anywhere between 2-2.5 hrs before I had to go into work in the mornings. Just to have some “me” time, with my Dog and I in the a.m. It’s soo nice isn’t it?
That would be amazing. Love the idea of some me time. However, it would require me to be up at like 4 am. For now I will settle on going to bed earlier so when I do wake up I won’t be as tired.
I truly believe that those are key to life. Resting, living, and ENJOYING the present. Well done!
Glad to see you approve as I feel you are very good at living in the present and being there.
GREAT GOALS!! I am with you about the whole disconnecting and being present shtick! I am on my phone way too much…sigh hhaha I will work on that!
I am attached to the thing. It is constantly beeping between Twitter, FB, and email. I must try to turn it on, sooo hard.
Great goals! My personal goals are find time to read, go as paperless as possible and at least monthly date nights with my husband with half being other than run dates.
I am so excited to find time to read and I think it is great you are making time with your hubby a priority.
Really LOVE the idea of you silencing your phone to be present with other people – especially family!
Thought you would momma. I’ll try it tomorrow during the Colts game.
Really awesome goals Abby! It sounds like your priorities are straight! I need to silence my phone more too! I am horrible with that!
It is so hard Mindy. As bloggers we are so connected – always.
I need to start disconnecting from social media at an appropriate time at night. I’ve been on vacation for 3 weeks, so I feel like I’m Twitter, FB, etc. 24/7! Monday will be a rude awakening once I’m back at the office!
BTW – Memoirs of a Geisha is one of my favorite books. Have you seen the movie yet?
I am going to read the book first and then see the movie.
I find I always like the books more.
Being present is SO hard! It seems like it should be easy, but that’s my big goal for this year, too. I want to be present and patient for my children and my spouse (which definitely means I need to disconnect from social media sometimes!).
It is crazy how much social media impacts, affects, and takes over as a blogger.
Those are some great goals! I think the computer off at 9:30 one is probably something I need too… but, I won’t stick to it. LOL Blogging takes up a lot of time, but I love it & like you, i’m addicted to social media.
That is my problem too. I really enjoy blogging so I get so caught up in it.
I love your goals! Good for you! You need to do more for yourself and keep some type of down time whether it be reading or spending time w friends. Oh and this means I get to see you even more often! Yay!
Probably about the same since I am so busy with work and running too. It does mean I won’t be playing on my phone when I am with you though.
Yeah, tell me about getting all wrapped up in doing a blog. Without you noticing it becomes kinda a second job to you!
It really is a second job. 30-40 hours a week, but no pay. Whooops.
Yep I find that it is SUPER easy to get wrapped up in blogging/social media stuff too…. so addicting!
Sounds like you have some great goals that are well rounded (i.e. different types of healthy goals that apply to more than just running)! Love all those pictures with you and your nephew!
It was so wonderful to get to see the little guy for a bit when I got home from CA. He spawned my goal to be more present.
Abby your goals are fantastic – and I like how you’ve divided them into three separate categories. I too fall victim to getting too wrapped up in all things social media and sometimes forget I’ve got a family and friends who need attention too! It’s good to have goals for our blogs, etc, but I think this is where we need to be very organised (I’m trying to get more organised with blogging this year), so it doesn’t overtake our lives.
Well done to you! I wish you the best in achieving each of your goals this year
Thanks Mary. I too am trying to get more organized by planning out blog topics in advance.
Great goals, Abby! I don’t really have many personal goals, I do need to organize our race bibs and medals and also start scrapbooking again.
Wow, I bet you two have a ton of race bibs and medals!
Good luck with your personal goals for this year!
Thank you so much.
I love that we have such similar personal goals this year. We can do it!
