I have big dreams for 2013 with a big comebetter attitude to match. Now I am just praying, and stretching every night, in hopes of avoiding injuries and being able to spend my year running instead of in physical therapy healing.
I will admit I did not start the new year off on the right foot -
I was supposed to run 7 miles this morning, but today was the only day my nephew was in town (that I had off work). So instead we ran together. (Not exactly 7 miles, but one of the best runs of my life!)
I can do 7 miles anytime, they are here only a few days a year, family wins.
Now on to the goals. I am putting them all here to hold me accountable. Now that I am up and running again I have big dreams. Last year I only finished one race due to multiple injuries and some quality (expensive) PT time.
Goal Number 1 – I will go from running only one race in 2012, to running 13 races in 2013
1. Jan. 19 – Charleston Half Marathon
2. Jan. 26 – Charlie Post 15K
3. Feb. 9 – Morris Island Lighthouse Half Marathon
4. Mar. 2 – Mullet Hall 10miler
5. Mar. 23 – Color Me Rad 5K
6. Apr. 6 – Cooper River Bridge Run 10K
7. Apr. 27 – Rock ‘n Roll Nashville Full Marathon
*May – Aug. Sprint Triathlon Series (Goal Number 2 – I will complete my first tri!)
8. Sept. 7 – Francis Marion Dirt Dash Half Marathon (or 12K)
9. Oct. 5 – IOP Connector Run 10K
10. Oct. 27 – Marine Corp Marathon
11. Nov. 6/7 – Festival of Lights 2 miler
12. Nov. 28 – Gobble Wobble 5K
13. Dec. 14 – Kiawah Island Half Marathon
Goal Number 3 – I will improve my speed.
I want another sub 2 hour half marathon finish and my first 4:30 full marathon this year.
To do this I will be completing the 5 by the 5th virtual run series and attempting to beat my previous 5 mile time each month, Hopefully this will get me out of the habit of only running long and slow.
My 2013 Running Goals:
- I will run 13 races in 2013
- I will complete my first tri
- I will improve my speed
What fitness/exercise/running goals do you have for 2013?

I really enjoyed the Dirt Dash 12K last year and think you’ll like it
. If you want a shorter race on Feb. 2 my friends are timing one in Summerville and I’m doing that, it’s a 5K. I’m also doing the Charleston half but probably sitting out the Charlie Post so I don’t race long back-to-back weekends. Hopefully I’ll see you again at the half or before!
As far as speed goes… what really helps me is running intervals on the treadmill and running long consistently. The tri should also improve your time because it builds endurance (you run the 5K on tired legs) and you cross train with bike (+1 to leg turnover) and swim (+1 to stronger lungs). So really your goals sorta compliment each other!
Not much is changing on my end for 2013… run long, hard and fast- tiny terror
.
I hope to add lost of speed training, intervals on the treadmill, once I get healthier. I am a bit hesitant to try it now since I am still in some pain.
I am glad to hear the dirt dash was fun as I know nothing about it.
Dirt Dash was awesome, one of my favorite races last year and I am definitely doing it again. I have a recap on my blog if you wanna read.
This is going to be YOUR year Abby! I just know it! You are gonna ROCK all these goals!!!
Thank you so much Mindy.
Great goals for 2013, looking forward to following your journey towards them!
Thanks. I just am hoping to be smart enough to listen to my body and stay healthy so I can achieve my goals.
Great goals! I’m excited to follow your journey toward becoming a triathlete! I’m also VERY intrigued by the Morris Island Lighthouse half marathon, I’ll have to look into that!
It is such a little race, however you could totally kayak out to Morris for a picnic after.
those are some great goals and good luck with the triathlon! shout if you need advice!
Oh, here will be shouting, hollering, and maybe some squealing.
Did I mention I am doing this on the mountain bike I got for my 10th birthday. (I will be 31 this summer.)
Your nephew is precious and I would have rather run with him too vs a planned run! 2013 is the year of awesomeness oh yea!
2013 We DOMINATE! #HOLYCRAP it is on!
LOVE, love, love your goals – and you’re going to do it!! Today doesn’t count, since hanging with the nephew trumps, but just stick with it and work your way through your list. Don’t forget to prioritize which ones are you key races and plan your training around those, so you can really knock them out of the park. Let me know if you need any help!!
Thanks so much Heather. I think my top concern right now is just being smart. Listening to my body, taking it easy, and not pushing back too fast since I am not 100% yet.
I’m wishing you an injury free 2013! I love your idea of running the 5 miles faster each month for 5 by the 5th. I might have to borrow that idea. I ran my 5 miles today and it felt great!
Steal away. I am such a happy slow runner and need something to motivate me to speed it up a bit.
Oh man I miss Chas! I wish I was a runner when I lived there because your list sounds like a great one! I look forward to hearing all about your races and seeing all the photos.
Best of luck with your 2013 goals!
E
It is a fabulous place to run. Have you considered coming back for Kiawah or Charleston half/full or the bridge run?
Great goals Abby! I’m sure you will reach all of them. I LOVE the pic of you running with your nephew, adorable!! Happy New Year!
Thanks. I am so crazy about that kid.
amazing goals! i am attempting #13in2013 as well! i haven’t officially signed up for any races yet but i have been looking!! i am also considering a tri or duathlon!! can’t wait to read about all of your races! good luck!
I have signed up for a few, but also have a few deferrals from last year so I think I am well on my way.
Good luck picking your 13.
So. Good.
Looking forward to seeing you comebetter for 2013. Your race calendar looks like the perfect balance, without being too much.
And when your nephew is in town, you totally get off your 7 miler!
I am glad to hear you also think he is excuse worthy.
That picture of you and your nephew is to die for!! I love your goals and I know that you’re going to dominate them. You’ve done a great job of listening to your body so 2013 can’t be anything but a comebetter type of year.
I am hoping my body listens back.
FITNESS
it sounds crazy but Id love to get certified to teach yoga!
Well you know my feelings on yoga (ahhhhhhh….)
But if you love it I say go for it.
AWESOME goals!!! I had thought about RnR Nashville half
But ended up visiting TN in March already – two trips in one month would be a little pricey! Awesome goals! Can’t wait to see your progress! I’m impressed that you have the entire year already listed. I am still too scared to commit to more races, but I know my race calendar will fill up quickly!
I have it listed, but haven’t paid yet.
I know nothing about TN so you will have to give me some touristy tips.
WOW…that picture of you and your nephew is frameworthy! So adorable…and a memorable run I’m sure
Thanks. I am crazy about him and him running… melt my heart.
Woo hoo Nashville! Some of my friends talked me into going…
Do you know anything about it?
It was the only driveable one that fit in my spring recovery schedule.
Pretty much…nope. I’m going, and that’s about all I know! I found a $10 discount code on RetailMeNot if you haven’t signed up yet
Good to know. I’ll Google discount codes.
Those are great goals Abby!!! You can do it!!
Thanks Karey.
Yes, a COMEBETTER for both of us!!! You have ALOT of races lined up so far, awesome! I only have 4…I think I’m going to wait until I complete the Big Sur to sign up for more since I’m so paranoid about getting injured again, AH!
I am waiting until this half is done to pay for most of them. I understand that fear.
Good luck with your new goals! And I have the same goal to stay healthy!:) No injuries, please.
That is goal number 1 for us both.
I am so impressed you have your entire year of racing already lined up!! Good luck with your great goals
Tentative, but it feels good to have a plan.
Your race schedule looks great! Have you done the Nashville RnR before? I know a few people who have done the half because I’m from TN originally. And one of my things this year is to improve speed too. I’m not afraid of running long, but running fast scares me for some reason. I think I’d rather run 10 miles than run 800 repeats. I know I need to work on that.
Nope. I was supposed to do MCM in the fall and Nashville is kind of my makeup.
I agree with you, I’d rather run 10 miles, than sprint 10 minutes.
Great line up of races – I’m still working on my 13.
You’re going to rock this year!
I am so excited.
They are still tentative, but it feels good to have a plan.
How could you not run with such a cutie. That smile!!
Great goals! 2013 is going to be amazing
Running with him was great. I am now convinced he will be a marathoner too:)
Great goals! I’m foing 5 by 5 also. Mostly to prove to myself that I can run. Regardless of how slow. My only goal is consistency and to increase my mileage each week.
You and your nephew running…so cute!
I think just setting the goal for consistency will be great. You’ll be shocked by how much you can run.
LOVE your running goals – I’m excited about the 13 in 2013 challenge. I don’t think it will be a challenge given that I ran 20+ in 2012, but it’s a fun thing to live up to! Looking forward to following along this year!
Wow. 20+ is amazing! I ran 1.
So needless to say I am excited for improvement.
You are going to have such a wonderful year especially with all these great races planned!
Looks like you have some great races scheduled! I wish I lived closer to Charleston just for some of those fun races you have listed.
I’m happy with Cooper River Bridge Run though. I always make it a nice long weekend that weekend.
Cooper River will be great. I love that one.
I may be bugging you a lot this spring/summer with tri questions then as I know nothing.
Great. I will
Thanks. I am so excited to try.
