I have seen lots of posts telling you to put your goals out there so others will hold you accountable… the “say it, do it” theory. Well apparently I am a believer in the paint it, hang it in your living room, it will stare you down each day, then you must do it or you will feel lame for having a painting that doesn’t make sense theory. (Oh, wait, you’ve’ never heard of that one?)
After my sad Marine Corp Marathon deferment I decided to run Rock’nRoll New Orleans this February that way I still get a marathon in this fall/winter. Hopefully it is a realistic goal as that gives me 2 months of PT time and then 4 months to train. So when my two besties and I used a Groupon for a super cheap Bottle & Brushes class I went a bit overboard. I knew we were painting signs that we could personalize so I did some MapQuesting beforehand. I knew Charleston had to be smack dap in the middle since I am in crazy love with my adopted hometown. I also wanted to include Indy since I was born and raised there, and most of my family still lives there, and Monterey Bay because my Oma headed for warmer weather before I did and settled there (my favorite running route ever is through Pacific Grove and into Monterey along the rocky water front cliffs).
Then I had to decide what other places to include. I thought about Asheville, NC and Savannah, GA as they are both gorgeous places that I love and have actually been to multiple times.
However, being the crazy, injured runner that I am I went straight for the motivation route:
2 arrows left – 2 marathons I want to know I am going to run –
Rock’nRoll New Orleans in Feb.
Marine Corp Marathon (DC) in Oct. 2012
I have never been to these cities so they are now hanging in my living room not as reminders of places I know and love, but as reminders of what will one day be.
Insert injured runner mantra here: Not now doesn’t mean not ever.
What do you do to record your goals & hold yourself accountable?
Do you keep mementos of them once they are accomplished?
