My PT is very nice and doesn’t seem to get frustrated by my barrage of endless questions (What exactly is wrong? What does that mean? How do you treat it? What do I need to do? How long until I see improvement? When can I run again? and on and on and on…) which is great especially since I was super confused about the sciatic nerve injury diagnosis the doctor gave me. After my initial evaluation the PT believes I am having SI joint issues, probably caused by that bad tackle in my rugby game in addition to lots of overuse, and that the SI problem is causing drama with both the sciatic nerve and the muscles in my left leg. Insert pain and inability to run here.
So to treat this I will see her two times a week for about two months and maybe more, if needed.
Our time together goes like this:
15 minutes of her teaching me stretches and strengthening exercises that I need to be doing at home and then watching to make sure I am doing them correctly. My plan is to do them every night before bed. I’m hoping having a consistent time will help me because heaven knows my ADHD tendencies don’t bode well for slow, relaxed stretching. Seriously this is usually my inner monologue while stretching: There’s my cat? Come here Harlee. What song is that? Was that mark always on the carpet? Oh crap, stretch Abby! My phone just beeped. Who is it?
Then 15 minutes of her working with me on mobility exercises to try to help the joint move properly and make sure everything is in place.
Then I move to my extra special bed –
Either my head is too big, or this hole is too small!
15 minutes using a sonogram to send heat and sound waves deep into the muscles to help relax and unknot them.
Then finally 15 minutes of dry needling. Basically this amounts to her sticking acupuncture needles into my bare butt (I have no dignity left at this point, if it helps me run push them in deeper! That’s what she said!) and then running an electric current through them. It feels crazy! Like little sections of my butt, lower back, and hamstrings are twitching and jumping. Make you wish your butt was electrifying too doesn’t it? Jealous yet? This is all supposed to help reset and relax the muscles.
I guess I will have to just wait and see how it goes. I am up for anything to get back to my normal running self. I miss the exercise like crazy and my spare tire really missing those 3,000+ calories I usually burn every week. I am currently doing next to no exercise in order to rest my body and I am going stir crazy. Yikes!
I went to the itty-bitty apt complex workout room last night to do 30 minutes of weights (arms only) wish I could walk or bike too, but I am actually even more sore after just starting PT. Yes, I realize my Running Wild shirt is false advertising, but they don’t make one that says Injuries Suck or the one I am totally about to design I’m Down with My PT (Totally just sang that last one to the tune of OPP in my head, keeping it classy!).
What have you done to keep up something you loved?
Would you let a stranger stick electric needles in you bare butt and run a current through them?
